We decided to not get wet and will go back next week.
Yesterday we walked up South Fork Trail, intending to walk to the second creek crossing to see if we could spot a Trogon. We got to the first crossing and the creek was running pretty swiftly and we had to decide whether to get our feet wet or wait for another day so the water level could go down. As we stood there, a couple of Coues White Tail bucks came playfully down the creek, splashing in the water. We watched them and they didn't seem to notice us at first, though the front deer seemed to be on the alert. As soon as that front deer saw Bud move, they took off running back upstream. We decided to not get wet and will go back next week.

We got up early this morning in Portal to drive back to Tucson for Wesley's birthday party tomorrow. It had rained all night and was still raining. The mountains were socked in and the creeks were running high. We drove to the Foothills Road creek crossing and decided we better take Highway 80 in New Mexico instead of trying to get to Noland Road. First mistake. We drove into New Mexico and headed north on Highway 80 towards I-10, and the rain was pretty heavy. Just after crossing San Simon River we saw a car on the side of the road with it's flashers on.....Bud said what's that crazy guy doing standing out in the rain? As we got closer we could see it was a middle aged woman in scrubs and she waved us down. We couldn't really just drive by a woman stranded in the middle of nowhere in the pouring rain. So, we pulled in front of her vehicle and this gal tells us she ran out of gas because there was no gas in Rodeo. We should've known right then that her story was hokey. Anyone in the area knows you have to fuel up in Willcox, Lordsburg or Douglas before driving Highway 80. Second mistake. We told her the closest gas was 60 miles away, but we'd give her a ride to Willcox, and she'd have to find her own way back. She said she had a group of kids she was taking to Willcox for physicals so they could participate in school sports. We could not see anyone in her car in the driving rain. We only had room for one person, so Bud suggested we drive back to Portal with "Sarah" (probably a fake name) 'cause we had a can of gas in our shed and she could make it to Willcox with that. "Sarah" told the kids to stay in the car and we'd be back with gas in 1/2 an hour. (in hindsight, we should've thought that was strange too, but being trusting people, we didn't start to question her story yet)..Third mistake. We drove back to Portal, rain was pretty heavy here and there. She asked me for our name and address so she could send us an official thank you letter, (hope that doesn't come back to haunt us). We got the gas can and headed back to "Sarah's" car. On the drive she told us she worked for the state, mostly on the Indian Reservations working in childrens' health programs for Health E Arizona. These kids however were not Native Americans and she was unable to recall where she picked them up.....that some of them didn't speak English.....yeah, you know where this is going. She offered us $20 for our help which I told her to Pay it Forward. Well, as we approached her vehicle there were a half dozen Border Patrol vehicles with lights flashing and a guy on the roof of one car with binoculars looking off into the hills. "Sarah" then says "don't stop, just drive by 'til I figure out what's going on, because I don't know if these kids are legal or not"....... We didn't make a fourth mistake, Bud said "I have to stop". The lightbulb finally went off and we both knew then that we were in the process of assisting a human smuggler and we weren't about to help her any more. All the doors of "Sarah's" car were open and the obvious illegal occupants had taken off across the muddy desert in the rain. The Border Patrol had them in their sights and were rounding them up. They told us to wait in the truck, that "Sarah's" vehicle was being seized and they would talk to us shortly. Well, I got in the truck. Bud & "Sarah" stood outside our truck. Bud told the Border Patrol we had just picked her up and taken her to get some gas and had no knowledge of the other occupants in her car......."Sarah's" story to the Border Patrol was that she had picked them up on the side of the road hitchhiking. HMMMMMM.....that's not what she told us, so Bud talked to one of the BP officers and told him she told us a different story. The officer told us we were free to go, but "Sarah" was under arrest. They were putting her in the back of their vehicle as we drove away. So, lesson learned. We will not stop to help someone in the driving rain again. We will simply call 911 and let the authorities handle it. "Sarah" looking out into the desert as her passengers are rounded up. We've been getting some wonderful monsoon rains here in Portal. Last week at our house we had 2.1 inches in just 4 days. Last night we had a gentle rain all night long 'til 7am this morning. Got another 3/4 inch of rain in the last two days. The creek is running again and things are greening up. The insects are really active. I watched a bunch of Dung Beetles clean up one of Mr. Browns poop piles! I'd been looking for the dog's poop so I could clean it up, and I hadn't found any in a few days. Now I know why! The Dung Beetles have been cleaning it up before I can get to it! I was amazed at how fast they cleaned up the whole pile! Check out this short video of their super strength and endurance!
http://youtu.be/GKPDNFry2lc So, this morning I was in the Portal yard chopping out some more bamboo when I heard a bunch of birds making a ruckus in a bush just outside our fence. I knew it meant either an owl or a snake was being mobbed. There were thrashers, cactus wrens, a pyrrhuloxia and a couple of tiny little house wrens leaping around in this bush squawking away. The tiny wrens were most aggressive, getting right down on the ground and displaying, so maybe the snake had eaten one of their young, I don't know, but when I spotted the snake it was coiled up sound asleep without a care in the world. All the birds finally decided it wasn't worth bothering with, except one little wren who kept at it for several minutes more before leaving the area. I love being tuned in with my wild neighbors so I recognize an alarm and can find what the commotion is all about. :) Rattlesnake resting comfortably under a bush. A tiny house wren fearlessly tried to intimidate the snake to no avail. The snake was relaxing and was unmoved by the commotion. Bud & I have enjoyed the Chiricahua Mountains of southeast Arizona since we first got together in 2003. We loved camping and hiking in the beautiful sky island, especially on the eastern side of the range in the Cave Creek Canyon area. Last year, 2013 we bought a rustic, primitive cabin on National Forest land in South Fork Cave Creek. It is one of only two cabins in this important birding canyon and we felt like we hit the jackpot when we were able to buy it. We spent as much time as we could at the cabin and each time we had to return to Tucson, we dreaded going back to civilization. The traffic, noise and congestion wore on both of us. Our home in the Tucson Mountains is great and we love our 5 acres there, but every time we'd go over the hill into Tucson, our blood pressure would rise and the aggravation made us both long for the quiet serenity of Cave Creek. The Forest land cabin is not to be used as a permanent residence and we wanted to live in Portal full time, so we started looking around a little more. Penny's Rockhouse on Rockhouse Road in Portal was for sale when we bought the cabin, but way out of our price range. After being on the market for a year, the family was anxious to sell, so we made an offer and after months of negotiations and compromise we were able to buy this lovely rock house just a block from downtown Portal. So our new permanent home beginning in July 2014 will be in Portal Arizona. It's a lovely small community with so much going on, I can't see us ever being bored! There are miles of hiking trails & the best birding in the country! There is an abundance of wildlife that the humans who live here manage to co-exist with. We appreciate all the neighbors we have here, whether two legged, four legged, winged or furred. Follow our new life here in Portal. It's going to be fun! |
